In Namibia, getting between towns without your own car comes down to five formats: a scheduled shared shuttle, a long-distance coach, a private transfer, a rental vehicle and a domestic flight. Between Windhoek and the coast, daily shuttles publish their terms online. Towards the north and north-east, FlyNamibia flights and private transfers quoted on request are the easiest options to document. Whichever format you choose, pin down six points in writing before you pay: the exact route, the real departure time, the number of passengers, the luggage, the pickup point and what happens if you are delayed.
In short
- Windhoek ↔ Swakopmund / Walvis Bay: at least two shared shuttles advertise a daily service, TownHoppers and Welwitschia Shuttle. With TownHoppers, the pickup arrangement depends on the direction of travel; with Welwitschia, door-to-door pickup is arranged on prior request.
- Windhoek ↔ the north or north-east: FlyNamibia’s website lists Ondangwa and Katima Mulilo. By road, the sources we consulted on 4 October 2026 did not let us confirm a scheduled passenger service: check coach routes directly for your date, then compare them with a quoted private transfer or a rental.
- Train: TransNamib’s passenger page carries no date and no timetable. Do not build a trip around a train without written confirmation from the operator.
- Hosea Kutako (HKIA) is not Eros: HKIA lies about 45 km east of Windhoek, according to Namibia Airports Company. Check on your ticket which airport you are actually using.
- To compare offers: convert each one to the same unit (per person or per vehicle), the same drop-off point and the same luggage allowance.
- Night travel: the Government of Canada’s travel advice, updated on 26 May 2026, recommends avoiding driving at night outside urban centres. Ask for the expected arrival time before booking a late departure.
The options we could document as of 4 October 2026
This table only lists what we could link to an operator or official source. It is not a ranking, and it does not guarantee that anything runs on your date. A line marked “not verified” means we could not consult the source, not that the service does not exist.
| Format | What the source establishes | What it does not say | Best suited if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle Windhoek ↔ coast | TownHoppers advertises a daily service along the B2 (Okahandja, Karibib, Usakos, Arandis). Welwitschia Shuttle advertises a daily Walvis Bay – Swakopmund – Windhoek service, plus airport transfers. | Fares, luggage allowance and cancellation terms: none of this appears on the pages we consulted. | You are travelling alone or as a couple, light, with a flexible schedule. |
| Long-distance coach | The Namibia Tourism Board names Intercape for international routes from Windhoek. | Not verified: Intercape’s website refused our requests (error 403) on 4 October 2026. No timetable or fare is quoted here. | You can check the route yourself on the operator’s website or at one of its sales offices. |
| Private transfer | TownHoppers offers private vehicles from 3–4 up to 19 seats “throughout Namibia”. Welwitschia offers private transfers “with prior arrangement”. | Price, waiting time and surcharges: quoted on request. | You are a group or a family, carry a lot of luggage, or have to meet a precise time. |
| Domestic flight | FlyNamibia lists Windhoek Eros, Windhoek International, Lüderitz, Katima Mulilo and Ondangwa among its destinations. Its seasonal FlyNamibia Safari circuit departs from HKIA, from 1 May to 30 November 2026. | Frequencies and fares for a given date: check when you book. | The road journey would be long and your town is one of the airline’s destinations (north, north-east, Lüderitz). |
| Rental vehicle | The Namibia Tourism Board recommends not exceeding 80 km/h on gravel. | This is not “booked” transport: fatigue and road risk stay with you. | You are linking several stops away from the main routes. |
| Train (TransNamib) | The “Passenger Service” page describes StarLine and Desert Express. | The page is undated and gives neither a timetable nor a way to book. | Only once TransNamib has confirmed your date in writing. |
Three routes, three different trade-offs
Windhoek ↔ Swakopmund or Walvis Bay: where a shuttle makes sense
This is the best-documented route, and it shows the most useful trap to know about. On TownHoppers’ service page, consulted on 4 October 2026 and undated, pickup in Swakopmund is listed as “door pick up” from 06:00 for a 07:00 departure. In the Windhoek → coast direction, it reads “bus stop pick-ups only” at 14:30 for a 15:00 departure. The same operator therefore does not treat you the same way on the outbound and return legs. Leaving Windhoek, ask exactly where that stop is and how you will get there from your accommodation with your bags.
A 15:00 departure also raises the question of when you arrive. Ask for the estimated arrival time and compare it with nightfall on your date. Welwitschia Shuttle advertises home pickup “on request with prior arrangement”: that is an option to have confirmed, not something included by default. To decide where to sleep on arrival, our guide Swakopmund: where to stay, eat and get around helps you check whether the drop-off lands near your address.
Windhoek ↔ Ondangwa and the north: compare flying and driving on total cost
FlyNamibia lists Ondangwa among its destinations. Namibian business press (Observer24) describes Eros as the airline’s base for domestic flights. Do not infer the airport of your own flight from that: the ticket is what counts. By road, the sources we consulted did not let us confirm a scheduled passenger service. That does not prove there is none, so ask coach operators about your date and set their answers against a quoted private transfer or a rental. The comparison turns on the pricing unit: a private transfer is charged per vehicle, a flight per passenger. The bigger the group, the more attractive the vehicle becomes. Only two real quotes for your dates will settle it.
Windhoek ↔ Katima Mulilo and the Zambezi: distance changes the decision
Katima Mulilo is also one of FlyNamibia’s destinations. By road, it sits at the far end of the country, and we found no official published distance to quote. Ask the provider how long they expect the journey to take, the departure time, the breaks, whether there is one driver or a relay, and the arrival time. If you would arrive after dark, ask for an overnight stop on the way. Before booking, read our Zambezi Region safety and logistics guide. If you are considering a rental once you have landed, use the Ayivoo Transport search for “Katima” to find people to contact, then confirm their service area, their terms and whether a vehicle is free.
Start from the actual journey, not the town name
“Windhoek to Swakopmund” is not yet a booking. Does the vehicle leave from your accommodation, from a meeting point or from a stop? On arrival, will you be at your lodging, or will you need to arrange a second ride? The TownHoppers example makes the point: pickup can be at your door in one direction and at a stop in the other.
If you are arriving by air, name the airport. HKIA, the international airport, lies about 45 km east of Windhoek according to Namibia Airports Company, which states that airport shuttles serve it. Eros is the city airport. A connection such as “HKIA, then a shuttle to the coast” means two journeys, and therefore two sets of delay rules. Give your flight number and ask what happens if it is late: does the driver wait, at what cost, or is the booking treated as a no-show? If you are spending your first night in Windhoek, our Windhoek first-trip guide helps you decide whether to push on or stay put.
Choose the format that fits your group
| Option | Best suited if… | Pricing unit to ask for | The question that decides it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat on a shared shuttle | Flexible schedule, little luggage, one or two people. | Per person | Is the departure fixed, how many stops are planned and where is the drop-off? |
| Private transfer | Group, family, lots of luggage, a precise flight arrival. | Per vehicle | Does the price cover the whole vehicle, door-to-door service and waiting time? |
| Transfer with stops | A useful stop on the way or an intermediate drop-off. | Per vehicle, plus stopping time | Are detours and waiting time included? |
| Domestic flight | Trips to the north, north-east or Lüderitz, or when time is short. | Per passenger, plus luggage | Which departure airport, what allowance, what transfer on arrival? |
This table does not crown a universal winner. It forces you to compare on the same basis. For a family, three shuttle seats plus a taxi to the stop and another on arrival can cost more than a private vehicle. If you are travelling solo, also work out the cost of a shared seat together with the rides to and from the stops: no format wins before you have done that sum. For accessibility, turn every need into a question the provider can answer: step height, room for a folding wheelchair, child seat provided or to bring yourself.
Compare two offers without mixing up the units
Copy this grid and fill it in only with what each provider has put in writing. If a line stays empty, it is often the waiting time at HKIA or the final drop-off: ask before you compare prices.
| Point | Offer A | Offer B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared or private | Sets the pricing unit and the number of stops. | ||
| Total price and currency | Per person or per vehicle? Taxes included? | ||
| Exact pickup point | Hotel, stop, HKIA or Eros: the first kilometre may cost you a taxi. | ||
| Exact drop-off point | Your accommodation’s door or a central point: so may the last kilometre. | ||
| Luggage | Number of bags, weight, bulky items, any surcharge. | ||
| Estimated arrival time | Arriving before dark, connections, check-in. | ||
| Waiting time if you are delayed | Free waiting period, cost beyond it, what happens if the flight is cancelled. | ||
| Payment and cancellation | Deposit, payment channel, receipt, refund timeline. |

To build your shortlist, the Ayivoo Transport search for “transfer” brings up providers whose profiles mention transfers. Then send the same message to two or three of them.
The message that saves five rounds of back-and-forth
Hello, we are looking for transport on [date] from [exact address or airport: HKIA, Eros, hotel] to [exact arrival address]. We are [number] adults and [number] children aged [ages], with [number] suitcases of about [approximate weight] and [any bulky item]. We can leave between [time] and [time] and would like to arrive before dark. If we are arriving by air, our flight is [number], due at [time].
Could you tell us in writing: whether the trip is private or shared; the exact pickup and drop-off points; the type of vehicle; the estimated arrival time and planned stops; the luggage allowance; the total price, its unit (per person or per vehicle) and currency; what could change it (waiting time, detours, extra luggage); how long you would wait if our flight is delayed; and the payment method, receipt and cancellation terms? We also need [child seat / room for a folding wheelchair / other]: can you confirm this?
Sending a request is not the same as booking. Treat the trip as booked only once the provider has confirmed the date, time, pickup point and price in writing. As long as all you have is a price given verbally, you are still dealing in estimates.
Luggage: the detail that breaks connections
The shuttles we looked at do not publish a luggage allowance, so ask for it. Air travel can be stricter. For its seasonal FlyNamibia Safari circuit (1 May to 30 November 2026), the airline requires a soft bag with no frame, wheels or retractable handle, weighing no more than 20 kg including hand luggage and camera gear. A hard suitcase that a shuttle accepts may therefore be refused on that circuit. On other flights, the allowance shown on your ticket applies. FlyNamibia’s conditions of carriage refer to the allowance printed on the e-ticket and close check-in 30 minutes before a domestic flight. Plan your transfer to the airport accordingly.

Roads, night and taxis: the published safety advice
The Namibia Tourism Board recommends not exceeding 80 km/h on gravel. That figure is a ceiling, not a speed to hold. The Government of Canada’s travel advice, written for Canadian travellers and updated on 26 May 2026, recommends avoiding driving at night outside urban centres. Whether or not you are the one driving, that changes the question to ask: “What time do we arrive?” matters as much as “What time do we leave?”.
The same advice recommends against minibuses. It also advises against hailing taxis in the street and suggests using registered taxis that carry the NABTA logo. To reach a pickup point, ask your accommodation to order the taxi for you. For more on Windhoek, our Windhoek safety and logistics guide covers that first ride in detail.
Check the full cost before you pay
Ask for a total amount and the currency, then find out what could still change it: extra luggage, an unplanned stop, waiting time, a distant pickup, a change of schedule, an additional passenger. A surcharge is not necessarily unfair; simply ask for it to be priced in writing before you pay. Then check the payment schedule: deposit or full payment, channel, receipt, confirmation deadline and cancellation. Never share bank or identity details that the booking does not actually require.
The day before and the day you leave
- Reconfirm the time, the exact place and a way to recognise the vehicle or the driver.
- Save the arrival address and the provider’s contact details for offline use.
- Keep medication, documents and a charger on you, not in a hold you cannot easily reach.
- Leave a margin before any flight connection; do not chain a shuttle and a flight with only an hour to spare.
- If anything changes, write down what you have understood and ask for confirmation: “So we are confirming an 08:30 departure from… at the same price.”
What an Ayivoo profile can — and cannot — tell you
The Ayivoo Transport category for Namibia helps you find people to contact. Read the activity described in each profile: a vehicle rental company does not necessarily run a shuttle or offer transfers with a driver. A profile does not prove that a vehicle is free or that a trip will run on your date. Equally, a search that returns nothing does not mean the service does not exist. Ask which transport format they actually offer, then apply the grid above. For the general approach, see our Windhoek local booking guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a bus between Windhoek and Swakopmund?
Yes, in the form of shared shuttles: TownHoppers and Welwitschia Shuttle each advertise a daily service on their websites (consulted on 4 October 2026). The tourism board names Intercape as a coach operator, but its website could not be consulted, so confirm any route directly.
Can you take the train between Windhoek and the coast or the north?
TransNamib’s passenger page describes StarLine and Desert Express, but with no date, no timetable and no way to book. Do not count on a train without written confirmation from TransNamib for your date.
How do you get to Ondangwa or Katima Mulilo without a car?
FlyNamibia lists both towns among its destinations; check the departure airport (Eros or HKIA) on your ticket. By road, check coach routes directly for your date: the sources we consulted could not confirm them, and their absence is not established either. Then compare the answers with a quote for a private transfer.
HKIA or Eros: what difference does it make to my transfer?
HKIA is the international airport, about 45 km east of Windhoek according to Namibia Airports Company. Eros is the city airport. Always give the provider the exact airport, because the journey time and the price are completely different.
Will a hard suitcase be accepted everywhere?
For the season running from 1 May to 30 November 2026, the FlyNamibia Safari circuit requires a soft bag of no more than 20 kg, hand luggage included. The airline also describes an extra-seat option for oversized luggage: ask about the conditions for your flight before relying on it. For a shuttle or transfer, ask for the allowance in writing, because the pages we consulted do not publish it.
Is a shared shuttle or a private transfer the better choice?
If you are travelling alone and light, a shared shuttle charged per person is often the simplest option; still do the sum with the taxis to and from the stops. From three or four people, with children or a precise flight arrival, compare it with a private transfer charged per vehicle, adding the cost of taxis to and from the stops.
Should you travel by road at night?
The Government of Canada’s travel advice of 26 May 2026 recommends avoiding driving at night outside urban centres. Ask for the estimated arrival time and choose a departure that gets you there before dark.
Sources and last check
Checked on 4 October 2026. Services, pickup times and private transfers: TownHoppers — Our Services (undated page) and Welwitschia Shuttle. Air destinations: FlyNamibia. Seasonal circuit and luggage rule: FlyNamibia Safari. Check-in: FlyNamibia conditions of carriage. Eros as domestic base: Observer24 (press). HKIA distance and shuttles: Namibia Airports Company. Coaches, gravel roads: Namibia Tourism Board — Transportation (undated page). Train: TransNamib — Passenger Service (undated, no timetable). Night driving, minibuses and taxis: Government of Canada (updated 26 May 2026). Intercape’s website could not be consulted (error 403), so nothing is taken from it. No fares are published here: the sources we consulted gave none we could rely on. Timetables and services can change, so have them confirmed for your date.
What we would suggest next: choose your format with the first table, then find Transport providers on Ayivoo that mention a shuttle. Fill in the grid with their replies: two complete answers are worth more than ten prices you cannot compare.
The illustrations show preparation scenes; they do not depict any operator, Ayivoo interface or real quote.
